Leading Youth Through Dark Times: Finding Purpose in the Midst of Tragedy

youth development Sep 14, 2025

The assassination of Charlie Kirk has left many of us stunned. Regardless of your views on politics or personalities, moments like this shake us. They stop us in our tracks, force us to catch our breath, and remind us of both the fragility of life and the deep brokenness in our world.

But here’s the thing: while you and I process this news as adults, there’s a whole generation of young people watching. They’re scrolling their feeds, overhearing conversations, and trying to make sense of a world that feels increasingly unsafe and unstable. And when tragedy strikes, they look to us. Not because we have all the answers, but because they desperately want to see what hope looks like when the ground shakes.

This is where our leadership matters most.

The Questions Youth Are Asking

In moments of crisis, young people are quietly asking questions that may never leave their lips:

  • Where do I place my trust?

  • What does my future look like in a world like this?

  • Does my life even matter in the face of so much chaos?

These aren’t small questions. They’re identity-shaping, future-shaping questions. And how we, as parents, teachers, coaches, mentors, and leaders, respond can either point them toward despair—or toward purpose.

Leading with Presence, Not Perfection

The good news is this: youth don’t need us to be flawless leaders. They don’t need perfect explanations or airtight solutions. What they need most is presence.

When we slow down long enough to sit with them, listen deeply, and acknowledge their fears, we’re telling them something powerful: You’re not alone. Your feelings matter. You are seen and heard.

Never underestimate the power of presence. Often, it’s not the eloquent speech or the polished answer that anchors a young person—it’s the steady presence of someone who refuses to leave when things get hard.

Pointing to Purpose in the Chaos

Here’s a truth every young person needs to hear right now: your life is not random. Your gifts are not an accident. Your story matters because you were created with intentionality and called with purpose.

When tragedy makes the world feel meaningless, we have the privilege of pointing them back to meaning. We can help them see that pain and injustice are not the end of the story. God has called them to live on mission—whether that mission takes shape in the classroom, on the sports field, in their community, or one day on the global stage.

Young people long to believe that their lives make a difference. Our role is to keep reminding them that they do.

Modeling Faith Over Fear

Here’s where leadership becomes personal: youth are watching not just what we say, but how we live. If our response to tragedy is fear, bitterness, or despair, they’ll pick that up. If our response is faith, hope, and courage, they’ll pick that up too.

This doesn’t mean we fake strength or pretend everything is fine. It means we show them what resilience looks like. We model what it means to hold onto hope even when circumstances are uncertain. We demonstrate that faith in God is not a shallow slogan but a steady anchor that holds when life feels like it’s falling apart.

Challenging Youth to Rise

Finally, we have to challenge the next generation to rise. The greatest way we can honor leaders who’ve fallen is to raise up new leaders—young men and women who are ready to serve, lead, and shine light in dark places.

Leadership isn’t about age. It’s about influence. And every young person has the potential to be a leader in their circle of influence. By calling them to step forward with courage, we’re helping them see that their lives can push back the darkness.

Your Role in This Moment

Friend, let me speak directly to you. You have influence in the life of a young person—whether it’s your child, a student, an athlete, or a kid in your community. Don’t underestimate that influence. God placed you in their life for such a time as this.

When the world feels unstable, your steady presence, your words of hope, and your example of faith can be the very thing that keeps them moving forward. You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be faithful.

Moving Forward with Purpose

The times may be uncertain, but God’s calling has never been clearer. He is still at work. He is still raising up a generation to live boldly for Him. And He has given us the privilege of walking alongside them, pointing them to truth, and helping them discover their mission.

Let’s not shrink back in fear. Let’s press forward with courage. Let’s lead with hope, faith, and love.

Because here’s the truth: the next generation is counting on us. And with God’s help, we can equip them not just to survive these dark times—but to rise above them, live with purpose, and make an eternal impact.
